The University of Southern California Postdoctoral Scholar Benefit Program

Dental Plans

The University of Southern California Postdoctoral Scholar Benefit Program offers you the choice of either the California Dental DHMO plan or the Principal Dental Point of Service (POS) Plan, both providing a broad range of coverage for dental procedures.

The California Dental Advantage 75 DHMO Plan

Exams, cleanings (also known as 'prophylaxis'), x-rays and most fillings are covered at no-charge on this plan. Please click on the Plan Copays link for a detailed list of services and relative copays associated with this plan.

We recommend that you make a copy of the above referenced list to take with you to your dental appointments so you may always have a reference to what your copay will be for the procedures that are performed. Please note that the frequency of exams, cleanings and x-rays are relative to the plan.

It is necessary that you choose a Primary Dentist (PD) for the Dental DHMO plan. Please click on CDN Provider Directory in order to choose a dentist in your area. Once you are on the California Dental homepage, enter your zip code and click on Find A Dentist. You will access a page listing dentists, but now you will need to select A75 in the drop-down menu under Accepting Plans. This will generate a list of dentists that accept the Advantage 75 Plan. Please choose a dentist from this list. If you do not choose a PD, and do not put the four-digit PD office number on the enrollment form in Section 5, you and your enrolling family members will not have a dentist and will not be able to access care until you choose one. You will receive a letter from California Dental alerting you to choose a dentist.

Once you select a PD, you may change to another dentist as long as you make the change by the 15th of the month. Your new dental selection will be effective by the 1st of the following month.

The Principal Point of Service (POS) Plan

The Principal POS plan offers comprehensive coverage, adding an additional tier of benefits as an option for your care, called the EPO Tier. EPO indicates “Exclusive Provider Organization”. A POS plan incorporates three tiers for delivery of care and you choose the tier you desire at the time of service:

  1. The EPO Tier: There are no deductibles in this tier, with preventive covered at 100%, basic covered at 90% and major covered at 60%. Basic procedures covered include periodontics and endodontics. This tier offers you the maximum amount of savings when you seek dental care.
  2. The PPO Tier: This tier covers preventive at 100%, basic covered at 80% and major covered 60%, with a $50 deductible.
  3. Non-Network Tier: This tier allows you to seek care from any non-network provider, at 100% preventive, 80% basic and 60% major.

Another valuable benefit included in this plan is the ‘Maximum Accumulation’ feature. This allows for a portion of unused maximum benefit to carry over to your next year’s maximum benefit amount.

It is important to understand that the Dental POS Plan is not as comprehensive as the DHMO plan in that there are limits to the dollar amount of services provided on an annual basis. You have a maximum benefit amount of $1500 that is accumulated each time you seek service in any of the 3 tiers, meaning, anytime you see a dentist. Please click on Principal POS Plan Benefits to access a summary of the dental coverage.

In order to choose a dentist if you seek services in the EPO or PPO networks, please click on Principal Provider Directory. Please print these instructions before you visit the site to choose your dentist.

Information Regarding Seeking Services In and Out-of-Network

It’s important to seek services in-network, either in the EPO or PPO tier, whenever possible to save you money on out-of-pocket costs, as well as to maintain the premium costs of the dental insurance for all enrollees. Please click on Seeking Dental Services In- and Out-of-Network for important information.
