Garnett-Powers & Associates is pleased to provide the University of Pennsylvania Postdoctoral Insurance Plan.

The Postdoctoral Insurance Plan was conceived and designed through joint efforts by the University of Pennsylvania and Garnett-Powers & Associates in order to offer a comprehensive, enhanced benefit program to all Postdoctoral Scholars at the University of Pennsylvania. Six insurance plans are offered to provide a broad spectrum of coverage for you and your family:

  • Medical: Aetna HMO or Aetna PPO (Postdocs living outside the HMO service area are automatically enrolled in the PPO)
  • Dental: Aetna DMO or Aetna PPO
  • Vision: Aetna PPO Vision
  • Life/AD&D: Standard

Postdoctoral Scholars
Open Enrollment – Plan Year 2016

The University of Pennsylvania Postdoctoral Insurance Plan Open Enrollment period is from November 16th – November 27th, 2015. If you are currently enrolled, Open Enrollment allows you to make changes to your enrollment with those changes being effective as of January 1st, 2016. If you previously waived, or waived your dependents, you may now enroll both yourself and your dependents.

Informative meetings will be held on campus on November 16th and 17th. Please click on Open Enrollment Meeting Schedule for a list of the times and locations of the meetings. We highly encourage you to attend a meeting so you may hear all of the details regarding the plans, ask any questions you may have regarding the benefits and making any Open Enrollment changes.

Important Information for Newly Appointed Postdoctoral Scholars

All newly appointed Postdoctoral Scholars are automatically enrolled in the following plans, even if you do not visit the enrollment form. Those plans are:
  • Aetna Medical HMO
  • Aetna Dental DMO
  • Aetna Vision PPO
  • Standard Life Insurance

For your convenience, you are automatically enrolled with a provider at the Penn Dental Medicine School Clinic. Penn Dental Medicine ranks #1 among the top dental schools in the U.S.A. for 2014 and provides state-of-the-art care in a comfortable environment. Please click on Enrollment for more detailed information about the valuable services and care offered at the Penn Dental Medicine School Clinic.

We encourage you to visit your enrollment form if you desire to make any changes to your automatic enrollment and/or provide us with your beneficiary information for the life insurance. In order to make any changes, you must visit the form within 31 days of the date shown under ‘Job Class Entry Date’ on your Enrollment Form. This 31-day period is your Period of Initial Eligibility.

The Enrollment Form allows you to do the following:

  • Enroll in and buy-up to the Medical PPO and /or the Dental PPO for you and your eligible dependents
  • Add your eligible dependents to the medical, dental and/or vision plan in which you are enrolled
  • Waive Coverage for yourself and/or your eligible dependents
  • Though not necessary, you may choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP) for the Aetna Medical HMO for you and your enrolling family members
  • Choose a different Primary Dentist from the one assigned for the Aetna Dental DMO for you and your enrolling family members
  • Complete a Beneficiary Form for the Life and AD&D Insurance

Waiving the Medical Plan

The University of Pennsylvania Postdoc Insurance Plan waiver standards are in compliance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  All postdocs that already have a health insurance policy must demonstrate proof of insurance for themselves by submitting a waiver application to Garnett-Powers & Associates.

For postdocs who would like to waive out of the University’s postdoc health insurance plan(s), a comparable health insurance plan must meet the requirements listed on this page: Penn Postdoc Insurance Waiver Standards. Please click on the link to assure that your plan meets all of the standards listed.

Making Changes to your Automatic Enrollment

Please follow the links on the side of this page to assist you in learning about the plans and completing the enrollment form should you wish to waive, add dependents or select another plan. In order to access the Postdoctoral Insurance Plan Enrollment Form, you will use your University ID number and home phone number (or cell phone number, whichever number you provided during your initial appointment processing) for your initial login. The Enrollment Form is a secure online enrollment tool that can be printed once you have followed the instructions for completion. In order to streamline your enrollment process, we recommend that you first print the Enrollment Form Instructions. This will allow you to have the instructions in front of you while completing the various sections of the form.
