The University of California, Irvine (UCI) GSHIP is a comprehensive healthcare package that offers valuable benefits and services to graduate, medical and law students. UCI feels it is of utmost importance to provide access to a strategically structured program that meets the needs of its graduate students and has been offering this unique benefit package for over 18 years.
The GSHIP is comprised of the following healthcare components:
- Medical: UnitedHealthcare/StudentResources PPO Plan
- Dental: Western Dental HMO Plan
- Vision: UCI Student Health Center/OC Optometric Group
GSHIP is a Mandatory Plan
The GSHIP is mandatory, meaning you may either choose the GSHIP for yourself, or you may waive it if you have what is considered to be equivalent private coverage. There are many reasons supporting the decision to have the plan be mandatory, but first and foremost is the consideration that all UCI graduate students will have access to needed healthcare, protected from financial disaster should an unexpected illness or accident occur. Please click on Waiving the Plan under Enrollment at left for more information.
Transition to the UCI Student Health Center for Academic Year 2009-2010
In order to provide access to the best care while at the same time managing costs, the decision was made to move from Gottschalk Medical Plaza to the UCI Student Health Center (SHC). The GSHIP Committee devoted two years to analyzing other student plans and ultimately made the decision to move to the SHC to provide quality healthcare in a student centered environment. Please click on Transition to Student Health Center at left to learn more about this decision and view letters that were sent to students during the summer detailing the process.
